Casino Royale is my favorite James Bond movie and even though, at the time of purchasing this blu - ray, I already had it on DVD, I just had to get it in high - definition to complete my collection as I had the other Daniel Craig Bonds on blu - ray. The movie looks fantastic. The color saturation is incredible, especially upon my first watch. Casino Royale is leaving HBO Max on Friday as well, and frankly you don’t need me to tell you that the Martin Campbell-directed relaunch is a winner. Daniel Craig’s second outing as 007. HBO Presents: Casino Royale (2006 film)

MI6 agent James Bond gains his status as a 00 agent by assassinating traitorous section chief Dryden and his contact.

In Uganda, the mysterious Mr. White introduces Steven Obanno, a high-ranking member of the Lord’s Resistance Army, to Le Chiffre, a private banker to terrorists. Obanno entrusts Le Chiffre with a large sum of money to invest safely; Le Chiffre subsequently buys put options on aerospace manufacturer Skyfleet, betting on the company’s failure given his insider knowledge of a planned terrorist attack.

In Madagascar, Bond pursues bomb-maker Mollaka to an embassy, shooting him dead and blowing up the building. In London, MI6 chief M admonishes Bond for ignoring international law and her orders to capture Mollaka alive. Clues point to corrupt Greek official Alex Dimitrios, whom Bond finds in the Bahamas. Seducing his wife Solange and winning his 1964 Aston Martin DB5 (reminiscent of the car from Goldfinger) in a poker game, Bond pursues Dimitrios to Miami, where he is forced to kill him. Following his henchman Carlos to the airport, Bond thwarts the destruction of Skyfleet’s airliner, losing Le Chiffre $101,206,000.

To recoup the money, Le Chiffre organizes a high-stakes Texas hold ‘em tournament at the Casino Royale in Montenegro. MI6 enters Bond in the tournament, believing a defeat will force Le Chiffre to seek asylum with the British government in exchange for information on his clients. Bond is paired with Vesper Lynd, a British Treasury agent protecting the $10 million buy-in. In Montenegro, they meet their contact, René Mathis.

Bond initially gains the upper hand, deducing Le Chiffre’s tell. Obanno ambushes Le Chiffre and his girlfriend Valenka with a machete, but allows him to continue playing to win back the money. Obanno’s bodyguard spots Bond and Vesper, forcing Bond to subdue the henchman and kill Obanno. After comforting a traumatised Vesper, Bond loses his stake when Le Chiffre is tipped off to his own tell, and Vesper refuses to authorize the $5 million to buy back in. Preparing to kill Le Chiffre, Bond meets fellow player Felix Leiter, a CIA agent, who agrees to stake Bond in exchange for taking Le Chiffre into American custody – a deal Bond readily accepts.

Bond rebuilds his position until Valenka poisons his martini with digitalis. Retrieving an antidote and defibrillator from his Aston Martin DBS V12, Bond passes out until Vesper rescues him. Much to Le Chiffre’s surprise, Bond returns to the game which culminates in a $115 million hand in which the remaining players go all in. Le Chiffre trumps the others, but Bond wins with a straight flush.

Apparently tipped off by Mathis, Le Chiffre kidnaps Vesper. In pursuit, Bond crashes his car to avoid Vesper, tied up in the road. Le Chiffre brings the captive Bond and Vesper to an abandoned ship and tortures Bond to reveal the account number and password to the winnings, but Bond refuses. As Le Chiffre prepares to castrate Bond, Mr. White kills Le Chiffre and his associates for their failure, leaving Bond and Vesper alive.

Bond awakens in an MI6 hospital and has Mathis arrested as the traitor. Transferring the winnings, Bond reveals the password, “Vesper”, admitting his love for her. He resigns from MI6 and they run away to Venice, but when M reveals the money was never deposited, Bond realises Vesper has betrayed him. He follows her to a handoff of the money, where gunmen take her captive. Bond shoots the building’s flotation devices, causing the foundation to sink into the Grand Canal. He kills the gunmen but Vesper, imprisoned in an elevator, apologises and locks herself inside as the lift plunges into the rising water. Bond frees Vesper and tries to resuscitate her, but is too late. White escapes with the money.

M informs Bond that the organisation behind Le Chiffre had threatened to kill Vesper’s lover unless she became a double agent; she likely made a deal – the money for Bond’s life. Bond tells M he will return to service, with M quipping that she hopes he “learned his lesson.”

At an estate in Lake Como, Bond locates Mr. White, shooting him in the leg and introducing himself: “The name’s Bond. James Bond.”

The HBO Max version of Casino Royale brings a longer and bloodier James Bond adventue to the streaming service.

While waiting for Daniel Craig’s final movie as James Bond to arrive in theaters. Fans will be able to catch up on Casino Royale, streaming on HBO Max. It’s the movie that started the actor’s distinguished journey as the super spy. And according to Fangoria’s Editor-in-Chief Phil Nobile Jr.. The version of the movie available on HBO’s new streaming service is longer and more violent than the original.

“The version of Casino Royale on HBOGO/MAX/WHATEVER is the slightly longer. It’ll bit more violent cut that was not released theatrically in the US. Heads up if you’re into that sort of thing.”

Now, before fans start getting their hopes up, this is not a ‘Snyder cut of Justice League’ type situation. Where the director of Casino Royale was forced to cut out major portions of the movie. All of which are now going to be consolidated on HBO Max into a super-cut of Casino Royale that turns the story into an entirely new thing.

Instead, the streaming version will feature certain brief moments from the original cut that were removed to avoid a stricter rating for the film’s theatrical release. Different countries have different standards for what is considered too gruesome for general audiences. And Casino Royale had to make edits to tone down the violence according to each country’s demands. The version of the movie available on HBO Max will do away with those edits to present the uncut version of the film.

What this means is that fight scenes will be slightly longer. And the violence will be more unflinching. With no quick cuts to a different shot just as the kicking and punching moments are picking up steam. So expect to see an even more brutal version of Daniel Craig as James Bond than the one audiences fell in love with when the movie first released all the way back in 2006.

Casino Royale tells the tale of the early days of James Bond. When his run-in with international terrorist and poker-enthusiast Le Chiffre almost ended the Britsh spy’s career. Not because the assignment proved too much for him. But because during the course of it Bond fell in love with Vesper Lynd and quit his job to marry her. Then Lynd betrayed him. And Bond returned to active duty as the cynical and emotionally closed-off James Bond that has become an icon of cinema.

The upcoming Bond movie No Time to Die features Craig in his final appearance as the master spy. And the actor has promised in previous interviews that the film will bring the emotional journey of Bond full circle since the start of his story in Casino Royale:

“I always had in the back of my mind a story I wanted to tell, and… it kind of happened. We have a through-line. And this movie is about tying all those ends up, about reconnecting him to Casino [Royale], really, and that’s what we’ve managed to do. There’s a big emotional journey for him in it.”
